A camshaft dowel pin keeps your cam and gear/sprocket in the proper position for performance. These locating camshaft dowel pin is solid and strong to do their job reliably keeping your components in place. Components of how a camshaft dowel pin works.

  • Camshaft
  • Gear/sprocket
  • Dowel pin

A camshaft dowel pin is used similarly to a keyway and shaft key. The difference is that the camshaft dowel pin is round, and a camshaft key is square. The camshaft key fits into a slot on each piece of equipment being held together in a perfect position.

Shaft Key

Shaft-Key

The shaft key prevents rotation between the two parts and may improve torque transmission. For a shaft key to function, the shaft and rotating machine part must have a keyway and a keyseat, which is a slot and pocket in which the shaft key fits. The whole system is called a keyed joint.

Keyways are grooves of different shapes cut along the axis of the cylindrical surface of shafts, into which a shaft key is fitted to provide a positive method of locating and driving members on the shafts. A keyway is also machined in the mounted member to receive the shaft key.

  • Shaft key - secures an operating part by fastening the key in or to the shaft.
  • Keyway – a slot cut in a part of a machine, to ensure correct orientation with another part which is fitted with a key.

Shafts and keys are two mechanical parts. Shafts are mostly used to transmit revolving motion and torque from one point to another point. Keys are used to connect mechanical elements like gears and cams that are mounted on the shaft.

Cam Dowel

Cam-Dowel

A cam dowel is used to hold a gear sprocket in alignment with a camshaft. This alignment keeps the cam in alignment to keep the motor running smoothly. A cam dowel is a pin that fits through gear sprocket and goes into the cam shaft, holding the sprocket and camshaft in place.

The cam dowel is the primary component to hold these elements in place.

To remove a cam dowel you must:

  • Remove old pin
  • Trial fit new pin
  • Ensure new cam dowel is fully seated
  • Grind cam dowel to proper length
  • Apply thread locking compound to cam dowel
  • Press cam dowel back into place, making sure it is fully seated.
